Sean Wittenberg, Safe Catch co-founder and trained scientist, was determined to find a solution to the high levels of mercury in fish after his mother developed mercury poisoning from daily tuna consumption. He brought his invention to national agencies, whose leaders were awed by its capabilities, but were unable to implement a government testing program due largely to pushback within the seafood industry itself.
