The root of marsh mallow, a perennial herb whose Greek name means “to heal.” This herb has been used for centuries to temporarily soothe irritated mucous membranes and ulcers of the stomach. When the roots are boiled, they produce a thickened liquid that was once used to make the confection we call marshmallows.
