Despite its color being caramel-brown, toasty-smelling Japanese hojicha is still a green tea! Hojicha in Japanese means “roasted tea,” and ours is made using kukicha which gives it its toasty flavor and sweetness. Like all Japanese green teas, hojicha is first steamed and then roasted, which gives it the brown color and also breaks down the tannins, flavonoids, and caffeine in the leaves. This makes hojicha milder-tasting than other Japanese green teas and also lowers its caffeine content. 

 

Hot brew: 1Tbsp tea leaves to 12 oz hot water (200°F) for 1-2 min

Cold brew: 1 Tbsp tea leaves to 12 oz ice water for 10-15 min
