Garden Huckleberries are an heirloom, antioxidant-rich berry best used canned or frozen for jams, pies, and syrups.  They are solanaceous (a nightshade like potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant), so unripe fruits may be toxic and shouldn't be eaten raw.  These plants grow very quickly and produce an amazing amount of large blueberry-like berries in a short time.  Berries turn from glossy to dull black and slightly soft when ripe.  These berries keep very well on and off the plant.  Tasteless to slightly tart when eaten raw, but the best flavor is revealed when cooked and slightly sweetened.  The brilliant purple/black hue is high in the antioxidant anthocyanin.  Very fun to grow!  Open pollinated.
