They’re also great mixed with diced sweet potatoes as a hearty side dish, base for veggie tacos, or mix them with meat for a more traditional dish. These instant black beans are precooked and preservative-free, for a quick way to get a tasty dinner on the table. Just add about 1 c boiling water to 1 c of our dehydrated beans, then stir, season, and serve!  Black beans are a great source of soluble fiber, folate (vitamin B9), iron, magnesium, and phosphorus, and their high protein content makes them a fantastic choice for vegetarian or vegan diets. 

 

 

Also known as the black turtle bean, the black bean is basically synonymous with Latin American cuisine, particularly the traditional dish frijoles negros, which translates to “black beans” and is usually served with rice. The name “turtle bean” comes from the legume’s hard shell. 

 

The black bean originated in the Americas, but its use didn’t really spread to the United States until the mid-1800s, after the Mexican-American War. Today, though, it's popular worldwide. 

Although black beans are best known in the US as part of savory Latin American dishes, there’s so much more you can do with them! For example, black beans sticky rice is a Thai dessert made with black beans, rice, coconut milk, and palm sugar.
